Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Beats Saint Anselm on Alumni Day, 50-44

Garden City, N.Y. - On this year's edition of Alumni Day, the Adelphi University women's basketball team prevailed over Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 50-44.

It was Rolanda Robinson who got the 'Cats rolling, scoring the hosts' first seven points in the first quarter. A run capped off by a three-pointer sent the crowd both past and present into a frenzy. Despite an electric start to the game, Adelphi saw itself trailing to the Hawks after one, 14-9.

Jenna Jordan came in her rendition of the 1-2 punch down low in the second frame. The graduate student scored eight points, including one that gave the Panthers their first lead of the game off a feed from Maura Carney. That's not to say Robinson let her foot off the gas, as a floating jumper capped the 16-8 second quarter and upped her first-half scoring total to 13. The stellar defense to end the half gave the home team a three-point advantage at the break.

The start of half two saw a little more even play, with the teams staying within six points of each other and trading baskets on most possessions. Jordan used the whistle to her advantage as well, getting to the line three times and going 5-for-6. Robinson and Jordan both began to focus in, as the two combined for 28 of the team's 36 points at the end of the third quarter.

In the final ten minutes of the game, there was the most back and forth play the game had seen yet. With neither team gaining more than a two-point lead down until the final three minutes, it was truly anyone's game. Saint Anselm's Melanie Hoyt scored two baskets in as many possessions to give the visitors another lead, but Kaitlyn O'Connell's floater tied it up again with 1:45 remaining.

After a subsequent miss, Robinson pulled down the rebound and hit a jumper inside the paint to give the Brown and Gold another lead with just 50 seconds to play. She then also stripped the ball inside the paint to make the Hawks start playing the foul game, with O'Connell nailing all four she was required, and the road team not scoring again. The veterans came out for the 'Cats this afternoon, with Robinson, Jordan, and O'Connell combining for 41 points.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and the Panthers will be back in action Wednesday (Feb. 21), when they go on the road to visit The College of Saint Rose. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
