Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Struggles Doom Men's Basketball in 67-62 Loss to Saint Anselm

Garden City, N.Y. - A scoring drought that covered the game's final five minutes spurned the Adelphi University men's basketball team Saturday, in what was a 67-62 defeat at the hands of Saint Anselm College in NE10 action at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Adelphi (16-9, 12-7 NE10) -- who led by double figures with eight minutes to go -- suffered a slide of 5:20 without a field goal that sent the Panthers to only their second loss at home in the 2023-24 season.

The loss, however, came without star player and NE10 Rookie of the Year Dayshaun Walton. Sidelined by injury, the 'Cats were still a solid 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from the floor and 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from deep.

Four players scored in double figures for the Brown and Gold, led by Elijah Lewis' 18 points. Seth Brown buried four three-pointers off the bench for 15 points. David Luberoff put forth a strong 28 minutes, totaling 12 points and eight rebounds. Mason Jackson stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

But, in the last 5:21 alone, the five on the floor for Adelphi shot 0-for-7 from the field. Saint Anselm's Josh Morrisette -- who scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half -- steered the comeback for the Hawks with 15 of those points in the final 8:01.

The Panthers did claw their way back from a significant deficit in both the first and second half. The 'Cats fell behind 13-3 out of the gate, until a 21-7 outburst had the hosts in front 24-20 midway through the opening twenty.

And despite trailing 31-29 at the intermission and 38-31 minutes into the second half, Adelphi strung together another impressive run -- this time, a 26-9 stretch -- that put the Panthers ahead by double digits at the 8:21 mark.

Reigning NE10 First Team All-Conference guard Tyler Arbuckle was held without a bucket in the second half for Saint Anselm (12-13, 10-9 NE10), although he finished the afternoon with 13 points.

Head Coach Dave Duke and the Panthers will take to the road Wednesday (Feb. 21), when they travel to Albany for one final regular-season meeting at The College of Saint Rose. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
