Rindge, NH -
David Luberoff notched his first career double-double as the Adelphi men's basketball team rode to an 84-72 victory over Franklin Pierce on Tuesday evening.
Sitting pretty at the no. 2 spot in the standings, the Panthers (16-8, 12-6 NE10) have four more games left in the regular season, with the conference tournament slated to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Luberoff accounted for 16 points and 10 boards in the win, as the team held a 37-24 advantage overall in the rebounding department, which proved to be the difference-maker.
Elijah Lewis led all players in scoring with 23 points after another 7-for-13 effort from the floor and was joined by
Matthew Price in the double-digit category, as he finished with 18. The duo combined for a 12-for-14 performance from the charity stripe.
After being knotted at 25-all, the visitors rattled off a 25-5 run that gave Adelphi a 20-point lead with 2:33 left in the opening half. In the first frame, the Panthers were solid from beyond the arc, landing 50 percent of its attempts. Lewis was lights out, putting together a 5-6 clip and perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free throw line.
Franklin Pierce had its work cut out for them entering the second half, but struggled to get anything going that really cut into its deficit. It seemed like every time the Ravens (4-20, 2-16 NE10) were on to something, Lewis or
Elijah Perry snuck in a three pointer, or Luberoff drove to the basket to score.
Under the six minute mark, the home team threatened to make an actual run at the lead, getting as close as 11, but had to continue chasing the Cats out of the free throw game.
The Panthers return home - and welcome their alumni back to campus - for a Saturday matinee with the women's team, hosting Saint Anselm College as the second game of the doubleheader. Dubbed Adelphi's Winter Alumni Day, all AU grads are welcome to the game and will receive complimentary snacks and tickets.
