Softball Falls Twice at Cal State Dominguez Hills; 7-5, 14-2

Carson, Calif. - Playing its second doubleheader in as many days, the No. 14 Adelphi University softball team lost both legs of its doubleheader at California State University Dominguez Hills on Monday, by the final scores of 7-5 and 14-2.

Game 1: Adelphi 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 7
The Brown and Gold wasted no time getting the offense going to start the day. An initial error got Jordyn Pasqueralli on base, and Courtney Wengryn's drive off the left-field fence brought her home to get things going. Alexa Sacripante then singled through the middle to give the Panthers a two-run advantage after the first.

Lindsey Hibbs continued her usual ways, holding the Toros to just three hits through the first three frames, additionally fanning three. To start the fourth however, a deep double to left-center tied the game, turning the tide. An immediate three-run home run followed from the hosts' Alani Nguyen. Though the next two were retired by Hibbs, another home run enlarged the deficit to five at the end of four.

After Pasqueralli once again found herself in scoring position, a fielder's choice from Sacripante brought her home to cut into the lead in the fifth. The 'Cats continued to scrap together runs in the next frame, with a sacrifice fly from Kendall Winn bringing in one more, and a Pasqueralli single trimmed the lead to just two.

In the final inning of play, Brianna Fischer's single later brought her to second with just one out. However, a groundout and a strikeout ended any chance of a comeback in Game 1.

Game 2: Adelphi 2, Cal State Dominguez Hills 14 (F/5)
Fresh off her NE10 Rookie of the Week award, Lily Kenney got the start for a second Game 2. After allowing the first two baserunners, Mariah Ramirez hit a three-run home run past the right-field wall to put the Toros up early, 3-0.

In the second, Fischer advanced to second with just one out, setting up Jaden Farhat to drive her home to put the 'Cats on the board. Despite Farhat later advancing to third and newcomer Kaitlyn Klepper also getting into scoring position, a flyout from Pasqueralli ended the inning.

The home team was halted in the bottom half of the inning, but the following frame proved to break the game open. A single and subsequent home run gave Dominguez Hills a 9-1 lead at the end of three.

As Kenney endeavored through the rest of the game, more pressure on the bases saw a grand slam from the Toros' Mia Ayala increase the margin to 14-1. In the top half of the fifth, Sacripante fouled out deep to right field, scoring Pasqueralli, upping the Brown and Gold's total to two before the game concluded due to mercy rule.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers now get a day off on Tuesday, not playing again until Wednesday (Feb. 14), when they take on Biola University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. EST.
