Softball Picks Up First Two Wins, Sweeps Doubleheader at Biola; 8-0, 2-1

La Mirada, Calif. - As opening week in California reaches its midway point, the Adelphi University softball team swept its doubleheader with Biola University on Wednesday afternoon, by the final scores of 8-0 and 2-1.

Game 1: Adelphi 8, Biola 0 (F/5)
Offense struck the iron hot right away, as Courtney Wengryn's single drove in Jordyn Pasqueralli for the first run of the game. Alexa Sacripante's subsequent double through the gap gave the Panthers an early multi-run lead.

After building more momentum in the third frame, senior Jaden Farhat launched a ball all the way to the fence, scoring two more runs. Additionally, the throwing error home by the shortstop let Farhat score from first creating a three-run inside the park home run giving the Brown and Gold a 5-0 lead.

To start the fifth inning, freshman Kaitlyn Klepper came up to the plate and towered the 1-2 pitch deep over the wall to dead center field. Following Zee Zee Shreter and Courtney Murphy getting on base, Wengryn brought them both home with another single to left field increasing the lead to eight.

Lindsey Hibbs earned her first win of the season, allowing just three hits along with a walk and a hit by pitch. The sole time the Eagles had a runner in scoring position, the senior struck out leadoff hitter Allie Beck, compiling five on the day.

Game 2: Adelphi 2, Biola 1
The second leg of today's contests had a much slower start than the first. No hits in the first inning led to a quick spark in the second when Farhat doubled and later got to third base with two outs. However, a groundout from Faith Camilleri stopped the push.

In the fourth frame, Wengryn put the Panthers in scoring position with a leadoff double to the right center gap. Unfortunately, two immediate outs from Sacripante and Farhat maintained the deadlock.

Lily Kenney once again saw herself in a low-scoring affair, only allowing three hits through her first five innings. The newcomer also walked just one, shutting the Eagles down for just five total baserunners in as many innings.

The hosts finally started to get their foots in their home dirt in the following frame. A single and double put runners on second and third with just one out, and a throwing error from Farhat brought the runner home to break the tie.

Going into the top half of the seventh, the road team was eager to extend the game. After Shreter came in as a pinch runner for Wengryn following her single, the senior third basemen Farhat brought her home to redeem herself and knot the score back up at one-all. With two more runners getting into scoring position shortly after, a flyout from Camilleri let Angeline Montanez come home from third to give the 'Cats the advantage.

Kenney approached the circle in the final frame ready to close out the doubleheader sweep, which she later did, earning her first win of the season. It only took three batters courtesy of a groundout and two flyouts to end the game 1-2-3.

Head Coach Carla Campagna and the Panthers are back in action on Thursday (Feb. 15) when they take on Azusa Pacific University. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
