San Marcos, Calif. - Returning to California for the first time since 2015, the No. 14 Adelphi University softball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with No. 7 California State University - San Marcos on Sunday afternoon; 2-1, 1-0
Game 1: Adelphi 1, Cal St. San-Marcos 2
The Panthers put together four hits in the first three frames, with senior
Courtney Wengryn's sacrifice fly to left field bringing home sophomore
Jordyn Pasqueralli to open up the scoring in the third.
2023 D2CCA National Pitcher of the Year
Lindsey Hibbs took the circle to open up the season and returned to usual dominant fashion. The Cougars weren't able to get anyone on base until there were two outs in the fourth inning off a single up the middle.
Cal State San Marcos got a single to open the fifth and advanced the runner to third following two subsequent groundouts. Pinch runner Klarissa Munoz then advanced home to tie the game following an error at shortstop. In the next inning, the 'Cats once again had two outs with a runner on third. Madison Waymire came home to give the Cougars the lead following another error at shortstop.
The Brown and Gold came out of the seventh and applied serious pressure to end the game. Loading the bases with just one out after
Faith Camilleri,
Kendall Winn, and
Kaitlyn Klepper all reached safely, Pasqueralli then took the plate and hit into an improbable double play to end the game with the pitcher doubling off pinch runner
Angelina Kellogg at first.
Game 2: Adelphi 0, Cal St. San Marcos 1 (F/8)
A new face found her way to the pitching ranks of Adelphi with freshman
Lily Kenney making her collegiate debut in the second half of Sunday's doubleheader. The Cromwell, Conn. native starred in her first appearance, holding the nationally-ranked hosts to just three hits through five innings of action.
The hit luck did not spread to the visitors however, with the Panthers only able to scrap together two hits throughout the game.
Alexa Sacripante singled in both the second and fifth inning with just one out. Unfortunately, Camilleri hit into a double play on both occasions, ending both frames just as momentum began to build.
Following Kenney's impressive first five innings, Hibbs came in relief as the one-two punch came in reverse for the remainder of the contest.
Seven innings weren't enough for this defensive battle as a combined seven hits couldn't get either side on the scoreboard. The international tiebreaker rule went into effect in the extra frames. Wengryn started at second, and Sacripante again reached base with one out in the eighth, but neither were able to advance as the top half came to a close. Once more getting the Cougars down to just one more out, a passed ball brought home the winning run to break the deadlock.
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and the Panthers now continue on the rest of their opening week in California, squaring off with California State University - Dominguez Hills for two tomorrow (Feb. 12). Game times are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
