Women's Basketball Falls in Wire-to-Wire Contest at SNHU, 59-57

Manchester, N.H. - On Saturday, the Adelphi University women's basketball team lost a nailbiting 59-57 overtime decision at the hands of Southern New Hampshire University at Stan Spirou Field House in Manchester.

The Penmen (16-5, 14-3 NE10) had the final possession of regulation trailing by a bucket. Although Adelphi (5-18, 3-14 NE10) nearly stole the inbound pass, SNHU's Macy Spinks recovered and handed off to Abby Wager, who drove to the rack for the game-tying lay-up with 0.8 seconds left.

SNHU found itself in a similar situation in overtime. This time, with the score tied at 57-all, the Penmen went to their leading scorer Adriana Timberlake out of a timeout. She successfully beat two Adelphi defenders to the rim for what resulted in the winning bucket at 4.2 seconds.

The Panthers still had their opportunity in the half court to send the game to a second overtime, but Isabella Asencio's lay-up at the buzzer missed off the window.

Adelphi forced 22 SNHU turnovers (most since Jan. 3) in the contest, which had the 'Cats ahead by double figures in the first twenty minutes.

A go-ahead first-quarter three by Asencio sparked an extended 14-2 run that had the Brown and Gold out to a 24-14 lead by the midway part of the second quarter.

Graduate forward Jenna Jordan -- who dropped a game-high 23 points in the effort -- accounted for the last six points of the run and buried the easy lay-in at the buzzer that sent Adelphi into the locker room with a 29-19 advantage.

SNHU eventually staged its comeback in the fourth quarter, when an 8-0 run to open the interval cut a nine-point Adelphi lead down to a single point with 6:02 left.

Asencio followed Jordan's 23-point day with 16 points of her own. Kaitlyn O'Connell knocked down a key first-half three-pointer in what was an 11-point game. Rolanda Robinson came down with a career-best 13 rebounds.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad are back on the road Tuesday (Feb. 13) in Rindge, N.H. at Franklin Pierce University at 5:30 p.m.
