Garden City, N.Y. - Aided by a 24 point day from senior guard
Rolanda Robinson, the Adelphi University women's basketball team won a big conference matchup against Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon at home, by a final score of 52-45.
It was a slow start in Garden City, with the Hawks breaking the ice nearly three full minutes into the contest courtesy of Melanie Hoyt. Over a minute later,
Victoria Morgan's step-back three pointer got the momentum rolling for the home team.
Kaitlyn O'Connell's floater towards the end of the frame kept the score close, ending the first at just a two point deficit.
While more of the same continued for the first half of the second quarter, Robinson would go on a scoring run starting at 4:24 through the half. The Brooklyn native first tied up the game on a deep shot, making it 17-all. Another from beyond the arc would give her double digits on the day, and the crowd would erupt on her third in just over two minutes to give the 'Cats a six point lead.
A turnaround jumper upped her point total to 15 for the half, capping her run with 11 of Adelphi's final 15 before heading to the locker rooms.
Low scoring was once more a theme to start the second half of action, with only 15 combined points, the lowest total of the afternoon. Robinson would chip in with four of her own though, and another three-point make from
Christina Sanchez would round out the home scoring before the fourth.
As they always do, the Brown and Gold continued to suffocate the opposition with their touch from behind the line. O'Connell and Sanchez would pile on, with the latter stretching the lead to 11 with under five minutes to go. Who else but Robinson would further extend that number to 14 when she knocked down her fifth on the day.
Saint Anselm would scratch and claw at that deficit for the final three minutes, cutting the lead down to seven at one point. However, it proved to be too little, too late as Adelphi would grab their third conference win of the season.
Morgan and Robinson tied for the team lead in rebounds, at six apiece.
Lauren Beberman and Sanchez both had two blocks, and the team would later combine for eight steals.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers will be back in action on Wednesday, December 18 against conference foe Assumption. Tip-off from the Center for Recreation & Sport is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
