Garden City, N.Y. - While outscoring their opposition 18-6 in the third quarter, the Adelphi University women's basketball team dropped its final conference game of 2024 to Assumption University Wednesday evening, by a final score of 54-50
Defense defined the first set of 10 minutes. While the first seven points were scored within the first 90 seconds, the next seven took over three minutes. While the 'Cats would keep things close for the majority of the quarter, the Greyhounds would end on a 6-0 run, gaining an early edge.Â
Separation began to widen in the second frame, with the Panthers eventually only scoring six points.
Isabella Asencio would account for four of them, through a jumper and a pair of free throws.
Gamila Betton would account for the other two, on a layup in the team's first possession.Â
Both teams would struggle from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes, combining at 3-17 for a 18% clip.Â
Even with an 11 point deficit to start the half, Adelphi showed no quit with their offense. A quick 9-0 run sparked the Brown and Gold, with signature marks-woman
Kaitlyn O'Connell hitting her first deep shot of the night. The visitors did their best to keep the 'Cats at an arm's length, but another three-pointer from O'Connell would give the hosts their first lead since 2-0 to end the third quarter.Â
The energy stayed up inside the Center for Recreation & Sport with every lead change that ensued in the final set of 10.
Christina Sanchez's jumper grabbed back the lead, with a three from recent hot hand
Rolanda Robinson upping the margin to two.Â
After a second make behind the line from Sanchez, Assumption would continue to scratch and claw in the final five minutes of regulation. After the road team grabbed the lead back,
Ariana Kupi's layup with around two and a half to go would slim the game back down to two points.Â
With the Panthers trailing by six with 20 seconds remaining, Robinson would knock down another deep shot to put the contest back to within one possession. Some excitement filled the home gym when Assumption's Antonia Panayides missed her first free throw, but knocking down her second essentially iced the game.Â
