Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi University men's basketball team hosted Queens College in their second game of the NE10/ECC Conference Challenge Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
It was a dominant win by the Panthers, who never trailed in the game. After the season opening victory against Molloy, the Adelphi offense was able to pick right back up where they left off. The 'Cats found a spark early and never looked back.Â
Mason Jackson set the tone scoring the first 4 points of the game in what was a spread out scoring attack for Adelphi. Eight different Panthers would score in the game, with Jackson and
Tavin Pierre Philippe leading with 16 a piece.
Pierre Philippe continued to lead the offense, showing his balance of play making and scoring ability, also being the team's leading assist man with six.
The Panthers put on a shooting clinic in the first half shooting 58 percent from the field and 54 percent from three, as Jackson, Pierre Philippe,
Andres Fulgencio and
Matthew Price all nailed triples.
The lead for Adelphi quickly grew, as their offense continued to pour it on, going up double digits early and having a comfortable 12 point lead halfway through the first half. As the clock continued to run down to just under 2 minutes left in the half, the 'Cats lead was up to 23 points, and would head to the locker room at half up 20.
The first half also featured stellar defense from the Panthers, as they held the knights to just 28 points. Led byÂ
Jarnel Rancy, who had three blocks, seven points, three rebounds and 2 assists, and
Al-Fatir Connor, who had three steals to go along with his eight points and four rebounds for the night.
In the second half, Adelphi continued its dominance, building a lead all the way up to 29 points. Queens would make a push to try and get back into the game cutting the lead to 16 with just over four minutes to play, but it wouldn't be enough as the Panthers handled the rally and closed the game out, securing a 80-66 victory.
Adelphi dominated the inside on offense, scoring 42 points in the paint, compared to Queens having just 16.
Head Coach
Dave Duke and the Panthers return to the court Wednesday, November 13th when they travel to Orangebury, N.Y. to take on Dominican University at 7 PM.
