Garden City, N.Y. - After a statement performance from the visitors, the Adelphi University women's basketball team fell to Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday evening, being held inside the Center for Recreation & Sport.
It was a slower start for the 'Cats, with
Isabella Asencio hitting the team's first field goal two and a half minutes after tip. The rest of the quarter stayed tight, with
Kaitlyn O'Connell's deep shot with 20 seconds to play cutting the lead to four. A last second layup from the visitors' Hope Fox ended the first frame 14-8.
Southern began to find some separation in the second quarter of play, starting on a 7-0 run capped off by a driving layup from Delaney Haines. Back-to-back three point shots from Rheyna Steinauer gave the Owls their biggest lead of the night thus far at 17. A hook shot with 28 seconds kept the lead there heading into the locker room.
Rolanda Robinson and
Lauren Beberman were tied for the Panther scoring lead with four, following Beberman's first make from beyond the arc this season.
The second half would not get any easier for the Brown and Gold, as they struggled to create anything on the offensive end. The Owls offense kept rolling, extending their lead over 30 points late in the third quarter, creating a lead that would go all the way up to 37 following a driving layup by Katie Williamson with 30 seconds remaining.
The final quarter featured slow starts from both teams, with neither team scoring for the first two and a half minutes. The visiting Owls were able to score first, and trade a few buckets back and fourth with the 'Cats. With Adelphi still trailing by 35 halfway through the fourth quarter, Southern would put it in cruise control the rest of the way.
In mop up duty, Freshman
Madison Williams showed flashes, scoring six points of her own in the quarter, and leading Adelphi in scoring with nine points.
For the Owls, four different players ended in double figures in the win, as Haines (10), Hope Fox (14), Williamson (10) and Steinauer (16) all contributed in big ways.
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and Adelphi will be back in action following the Thanksgiving holiday, on Saturday, Dec. 7. They'll square up with Virginia Union University inside the CRS, with tip-off scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
