Waltham, Mass. - In a game that will be remembered in Garden City for years to come, the Adelphi University women's basketball team won its contest against No. 3 Bentley University on Wednesday evening, by a final score of 59-55.
As Bentley cut the lead to one as late as the fourth quarter, two late heaves from
Kaitlyn O'Connell and
Christina Sanchez gave the 'Cats some much needed separation. While a layup from the Falcons' Maggie Whitmore would trim the lead back to three with nine seconds to play, a game-clinching free throw from Sanchez was all she wrote, earning the Brown and Gold their biggest win in recent memory.Â
The Panthers did not let the hosts feel comfortable from the opening tip, with a five combined steals between O'Connell and
Rolanda Robinson consistently applying the pressure. An O'Connell driving layup at the end of the quarter cemented an eight point lead for the visitors after the initial ten minutes.Â
With the lead soon increasing to double digits, the Falcons procured a run of their own, getting to within one past the midway point of the quarter. A deep shot from O'Connell increased her point total to nine, allowing the 'Cats to take a three point lead into the halftime break.Â
After both coaches got a chance to address their teams in the locker room, the Brown and Gold came out with the same intensity of the first 20.
Gamila Betton got Adelphi started, using her strong presence inside on the first possession. Robinson also knocked down a pair of jumpers to keep the road team out in front as the frame progressed. O'Connell and Robinson both found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc, giving the pair 14 and 13 respectively as the game crept into the final ten minutes.Â
Head Coach
Sade Jackson and the Panthers will be back in action this Saturday (Nov. 23) when they take on cross-town rival Molloy University. Tip-off inside the Center for Recreation & Sport is set for 1:30 p.m.Â
