Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to Assumption on Saturday afternoon for its conference opener.
The game started out very slowly as six minutes in, the Panthers held a 5-0 lead. Both offenses kicked it into gear at the halfway mark as more buckets began to fall.
Dayshaun Walton led the team down the court, dishing an assist on a three-pointer by Matthew Price and then scored on the fast break himself.
Mason Jackson, Patrick Burke and Tavin Pierre Philippe poured in some buckets of their own but the Greyhounds continued to respond and the Panthers would take only a 28-27 lead into the half.
The second stanza saw Adelphi expand its lead to seven in the early goings but Assumption responded, going on a 9-0 run. Once the Greyhounds gained the lead they never let it up.
A three-pointer by Burke with seven minutes remaining would give the 'Cats some juice but shooting woes would hurt them. Assumption would clog up the lane, not allowing Adelphi to get to the hoop.
The Panthers played solid defense, but every time they were able to get the shot clock under ten seconds, the Greyhounds would hit a big shot and ended the half shooting 50% from three.
Adelphi dropped its first conference game of the season, 76-60.
Walton scored a team-high 13 points while Pierre Philippe and Burke scored 11.
Fulgencio led the team with seven boards while Jarnel Rancy blocked four shots.
Head coach Dave Duke and the Panthers will return to the court on Wednesday when they head to Bentley for a 7:30 pm conference tilt.
