West Haven, Conn. - Despite a late fourth quarter score, the Adelphi University field hockey team broke its four-game winning streak in its game against University of New Haven Tuesday evening, by a final score of 2-1.
Both sides spent the first few minutes feeling each other out with both squads fighting for favorable playoff positioning. It was the Chargers though who would strike first, as Erin Smith would put the hosts on the board six and a half minutes after the opening draw.
While the Panthers would tally four shots by quarter's end, one of which from
Lana Mignon De Wet requiring a defensive save, none of them would cross the goal line before heading into the next set of 15.
The Brown and Gold would continue the pressure in the second frame, improving their total to nine overall by the halftime buzzer.
Ali Nagy,
Amanda Lee, and
Sydney Rossacci would be the shot-takers, but New Haven goalkeeper Cara Lambert would keep the home shutout preserved after 30 minutes.
With both teams increasing the tempo in the second half with seven combined shots, each chance weighed with heavier pressure. The 'Cats started to spread around the offense, with
Kelly Johnson and
Jillian Riche netting shots of their own, with Lambert continuing to keep a 0 in the goal column. New Haven's Smith would get her second of the game after collecting the ball at the 35 yard line, weaving another 15 to fire from the top of the circle, doubling the Charger lead before the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to fit the theme of the rest of the contest, as the Panthers would once more own the shot advantage, accumulating to 18-7 by the final buzzer, forcing Lambert to make eight saves. De Wet would fire home a rebound off
Emiline Biggin's blocked shot with 1:16 to play to give the Brown and Gold some life. Although the visitors' Lee would charge down the offensive zone with under 20 seconds to play, it proved to be too little, too late as New Haven escaped with the victory.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will wrap up the regular season at home on Saturday (Nov. 2) when they take on Saint Michael's College. Game time from Motamed Field is set for 11 a.m.
