Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Wraps Up 2024 Regular Season With Win Over Saint Michael's; 5-0

Garden City, N.Y.-  In the final game of the regular season, the Adelphi University field hockey team took care of business against conference foe Saint Michael's College, finishing with a final score of 5-0.

Through the first four minutes of the game both offenses pushed with aggression, each finding ways to get shots on goal. In the fifth minute of the match is when Adelphi was able to break it open, as junior Kelly Johnson from South Africa found the back of the goal. The first goal of the game was set up from Lana Mignon De Wet, and it was Johnson's second goal on the season.

From there on the Panther offense continued to apply pressure, but couldn't find a way to cash in for the rest of the first quarter. As the girls totaled 12 shots and six penalty corners in the first quarter. Saint Michael's defense held strong accumulating four saves, which brought us to end of the first 15.

The second period saw each team make pushes offensively, but both defenses held strong. As there was a combined eight saves between the two teams and no goals scored. At the halftime buzzer, the Panthers led just 1-0 despite the consistent offensive aggression. The 'Cats won the shot battle 21-9, and had 10 shots on goal for the half.

With the game being scoreless for 20 minutes straight, it took the 'Cats just two minutes to finally get back on the board in the 3rd quarter. De Wet came through for the girls, giving them a two goal lead and her ninth goal in 2024.

After the goal by Adelphi, the Purple Knights quickly tried to answer, as they had three shots and a corner all within 1:20 of the Brown and Gold's goal, trying to cut the lead in half. They couldn't find a way past home goalie Alison Gregory who got the start today.

Still in the third quarter, the Panthers were able to create more wiggle room for themselves as senior Jillian Riche scored the third goal of the day and her sixth for the season. Both teams would go scoreless for the next six minutes, ending the third, in what felt like a momentum shifting quarter for the Panthers.

In the final set of 15, the Panthers continued to apply pressure on Saint Michael's defense, as they would come through for two more goals. In the 50th minute, Caroline Beakes would extend the lead to 4-0, for her 6th of the year. Just three minutes later senior Ali Nagy would cap off the regular season finale with her 10th goal of the season, putting the Panthers up 5-0.

In the final seven minutes of the game, Adelphi was able to keep the Purple Knights off the board entirely, securing the shutout in which all three goalkeepers chipped in for the Brown and Gold, securing the win and bringing the team to a .500 record and 9-4 in conference for the year.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will now look ahead to the NE10 Tournament, as they await to see who they will match up with in the quarterfinal on Monday, November 4.
