Rockville Centre, N.Y. - In what traditionally plays out to be a challenging matchup, Adelphi University volleyball was victorious on Tuesday evening when they secured a five-set win over Molloy University inside Bob Houlihan Gymnasium.
Down 2-1 in the match, the Panthers (15-7) had to win the final two sets to extend their win streak to six. With the help of a double-double from
Macarty McQueen, Adelphi led in every team comparison category and was at a .205 team hitting percentage for the game.
After using extra points in the opener (28-26), Adelphi dropped the next two sets. The offense was held to a negative percentage in the second frame after committing 10 errors - but ultimately recorded 10 fewer than the hosts for the non-conference contest.
The Lions found their stride in the third frame, as kills-leader Kiarra Roth rattled off five and the team put down four service aces.
Adelphi turned it around in the fourth set with a defense at the net that put together four team blocks compared to Molloy's one. The visitors also managed a .450 team hitting percentage courtesy of 11 kills and just two errors. A commanding 25-12 decision in favor of the Panthers forced a fifth and deciding set.
Tied at two,
Jamaya Harris hit the service line for Adelphi and highlighted a five-point swing that put Adelphi ahead 6-3. Earning the sideout, a block from
Delaney Kiendra and
Noelle Alberda forced the switch of sides. McQueen found the floor to make it 9-4, causing the Lions coaching staff to call a timeout.
Regrouping,
Emilia Cascapera and
Kalena Ricketts both found the floor with strategic placement working out to match point. Molloy did not lay down without a fight, but after two straight points, Cascapera landed a kill to close the door on the non-league matchup.
Adelphi hosts Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, October 26 at 1:00 p.m. inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
