Worcester, Mass. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the No. 5 ranked Adelphi women's soccer team traveled up to Assumption on Tuesday night, hunting for their eighth straight victory.
The Panthers started the game with some quick offense, hitting the Greyhound goalkeeper with four early shots.
In the 14th minute, Madison Apicella stepped up to take a corner kick and scored an incredible olimpico goal, putting the ball in the back of the net from the corner flag. The offense would be jumpstarted by Apicella's goal as the 'Cats finished the half with 13 shots but could not find the back of the net for the remainder of the period.
Although they took a lead into halftime, the second half started with a hiccup as Assumption would tie the game less than a minute into the stanza. While this would rattle most teams, the Panthers continued their offensive pressure from the half prior.
In the 66th minute, Adelphi would capitalize on another corner kick. Apicella's cross would be batted out to Alexis Hellman. She tapped the ball to Gia Mandile who fired a bar down goal to give the Brown and Gold a 2-1 lead.
Assumption would try to counter but Kayleigh Goodrich would put the game out of reach in the 75th minute. Off of a free kick outside of the box, the sophomore would score a highlight reel goal to give Adelphi a 3-1 lead.
The stout Panthers defense would hold firm as the offense kept attacking. The game would end in a 3-1 'Cats victory and result in an eighth straight win.
Peyton DeRouen would make five saves as Adelphi outshot Assumption 27 to 14 and held a six to three edge on corner kicks.
The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Saturday at noon when they host Saint Michael's at Motamed Field.
