Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team welcomed Saint Michael's to Motamed Field as they were searching for a ninth consecutive victory.
The Purple Knights started the game off with a quick offensive attack, thumping a shot off of the crossbar in just the seventh minute.
Less than ten minutes later, the Panthers would exploit a Saint Michael's attack and counter. The ball was sent up to Dylann Trahey who corralled it and passed to Carly Issing who would fire her fifth goal of the season into the back of the net, giving Adelphi a 1-0 lead.
Saint Michael's would continue its attack and find paydirt in the 21st minute to tie the game up. Adelphi seemed to not be phased by the tie ballgame as it continued to play its game. The conference foes would change possession continuously through the remainder of the first, with neither able to score as the game was tied at the break.
The second period was much like the first as the Purple Knights kept on the offensive pressure. Madison Apicella threatened with a shot in the 55th minute but it was whisked away by the keeper.
In the 61st minute, Peyton DeRouen was able to make impressive back-to-back saves off of a Saint Michael's rush but the second shot still snuck behind her and trickled to the goal line. A Purple Knight was able to get there first and give the road team a 2-1 lead.
For the first time in a long time this season, the Panthers found themselves back on their heels. Saint Michael's was able to capitalize on this and in the 64th minute once again had a quick offensive flash. DeRouen came out of her net and went to slide tackle the ball away from the opposing attacker but did not catch enough of the ball. She was assessed a yellow card in the box and Saint Michael's would score the ensuing penalty kick for a 3-1 lead.
Adelphi would then apply the pressure for the remaining 25 minutes. Kayleigh Goodrich, Apicella and Isabella Banellis all threatened but shots were either saved or barely sailed wide. Saint Michael's would go on to win, 3-1.
The Panthers now move to 9-2, 7-1 NE10 on the season but still hold the number one spot in the conference standings.
The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire for senior day.
