Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Feeling Lucky! Women's Soccer Earns Seventh Win in a Row

Garden City, N.Y. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the No. 6 nationally ranked Adelphi hosted Franklin Pierce on Saturday for a Northeast-10 tilt.

The Ravens had the first offensive chance of the game with a shot that grabbed by goalkeeper Peyton DeRouen. Kayleigh Goodrich would respond no less than five minutes later with a shot of her own that was saved.

Both teams went back and forth for a bit until the Panthers struck in the 24th minute. Goodrich would loft the ball to Gia Mandile who took two touches before firing a shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Adelphi lead.

Franklin Pierce continued to shuffle their lineup to stop the Brown and Gold attack and it seemed to work for a bit as Adlephi could not scratch across a second goal in the first half.

That would change quickly, however, as the very first set piece out of halftime would result in another Panther goal. Julianna Violi would send a free kick into the box, which Goodrich headed to the feet of Carly Issing, who played in her first match since suffering an injury in Sept. 24. Issing would float the ball to the top left corner of the net, over the outstretched Raven keeper and into the back of the net.

A two-goal lead tends to be where Adelphi plays the defense, but Franklin Pierce would find a crack in the Panther armor just ten minutes later as an offensive chance turned into a penalty kick for the away team. Franklin Pierce would capitalize and cut the lead to one.

For the remaining 30 minutes of the match, the Ravens would turn the heat on, seemingly sending eight or nine players forward on every opportunity. The Panthers back end would stand strong as Franklin Pierce only had one truly threatening shot during their time in the Adelphi end. In the 79th minute a Raven forward would break free and take a shot but DeRouen would make a diving save and thwart any danger.

The 'Cats would hold the line for the remainder of the game and earn their seventh straight victory, 2-1.

Mandile and Issing both recorded their fourth goals of the season while Goodrich assists number five and six.

DeRouen made six saves, her third highest total of the season.

The Adelphi women's soccer team will return to the pitch on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Assumption, looking for an eighth straight win.
