Garden City, N.Y. - Capped off by a penalty stroke goal from
Ali Nagy, the Adelphi University field hockey team won its game against American International College on Tuesday evening by a final score of 1-0.
In what was a cold night at Motamed Field, both squads struggled to get hot. The Panthers came out with early aggression in the first 15, as they out-shot AIC six to zero. Adelphi had five shots on goal and four corners. The attack was no match for visiting goalkeeper Frederique den Hartog who had all the answers, racking up four saves and keeping the score deadlocked at zero.
The second quarter was a tale of the same story, as neither team was able to get on the board. Adelphi kept the offensive aggression up, as they once again bested AIC in shots four to one. The Yellow Jackets failed to get anything going on the offensive end most of the second frame.
The struggle in offensive production for the visitors was mainly due to injuries, as AIC played the full 60 with just ten on the field.
In what felt like a game Adelphi dominated and controlled the whole night, AIC began to find themselves in the mix. They'd continue to hang tough with the Panthers behind continuous dominating play from den Hartog, as she totaled six saves in the first 30. Adelphi dominated corners five to one to this point but could not cash in on any opportunities.
The 'Cats continued to knock on the door of AIC's defense in the third quarter, as they took fourteen shots compared to the Yellow Jackets' zero. Adelphi would dominate ball control, with six corners, and eight shots on goal. Once again the freshman goalkeeper from the Netherlands, den Hartog, tallying another five saves by quarter's end.
Along with the stellar play from den Hartog, she had help from graduate defensemen Morgan Martiello as she tallied her third defensive save of the game in the third quarter.
Graduate forward Emilline Biggin continued to apply pressure for the Brown and Gold, as she had five shots through the first three quarters. However, that would be all the offense the Panthers could create, going into the fourth still tied up.
The final 15 of regulation went as expected. Adelphi's offense applied pressure, and dominated ball control, but the 'Cats still could not gather enough offensive pressure to truly threaten the Yellow Jackets. Five shots were registerd by the four minute (remaining) mark.
In a pivotal moment as the clock winded down, Lana Mignon de Wet fired a shot home from the top of the circle off an input corner from Nagy. However, amidst the celebrations, the referees ruled it was outside the circle and disallowed the score, sending the game to an extra period.
Once seven on seven began, both squads were running sprints up and down the playing surface. Panther goalkeeper
Tayla Szmak was subbed in to provide an extra spark, which the Brown and Gold responded to with five more shots.
Olivia Docyk had a heartbreaker ding off the post just over five minutes in, but after it hit the foot of a defender off the rebound, Adelphi was granted a penalty stroke.
Nagy took care of business to score her eighth goal of 2024, on a goalkeeper who had accumulated 14 saves prior to that moment in den Hartog, much to the enjoyment of the fans at Motamed Field.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Southern Connecticut State University. Game time from Motamed Field is set for 3 p.m.
