Garden City, N.Y. — The Adelphi women's tennis team welcomed Assumption on Sunday morning for its final Northeast-10 matchup ahead of the conference tournament.
Before the match, Ada Amargioalei and Caterina Federici were honored for senior day, receiving gifts from their coaches and teammates.
The match was as close as it could get and the doubles matches set the tone. The number one pairing of Katarina Liedbeck and Zuzanna Witkowski were victorious, 6-2 but the two and three pairings were not as fortunate. The tandems of Roisin Boyd and Federici as well as Sarah Lindeman and Genesis Beltran were both victims to a tiebreak when they each fell 6(5)-7(7).
Singles play was where the Panthers bounced back. Liedbeck was victorious in her number one match, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Witkowska dropped her first set but battled back and pulled out an impressive 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Boyd handled her number three match with ease, earning a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
It looked like deja vu again for Lindeman when she dropped game one 6(4)-7(10) but the freshman battled back and won games two and three convincingly in her 6(4)-7(10), 6-0, 6-2 win.
Federici had a big comeback on senior day, pulling out a clutch 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 victory.
The win would put the 'Cats at 7-1 on the season, good enough for them to earn the number two seed and bye for the NE10 tournament. Adelphi will play in the semifinals on Friday.
