Springfield, Mass. — Head coach Brooke DeRosa and the Adelphi women's soccer team headed up to American International on Saturday night to continue conference play.
The Yellow Jackets put the pressure on the #10 ranked Panthers early and cashed in on a penalty kick in the 11th minute to take a 1-0 lead. While an early deficit may have discouraged some teams, that did not happen to the Brown and Gold.
Madison Apicella got the offensive push going with two quick shots and then in the 21st minute, Kayleigh Goodrich scored yet another scorcher from outside of the box to tie the game at one a piece. Adelphi would keep the ball in AIC's end for the next 25 minutes, not allowing its opponent another shot in the half but could not grab a lead just yet.
That would change quickly in the second period as Goodwin floated a beautiful cross to Gia Mandile who would head the ball past the keeper and give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Just like they have all season long, once Adelphi grabs a lead they sit back and play fantastic defense. AIC was not able to get past the Panthers front until the 87th minute. A Yellow Jacket forward sprang free and scored what looked to be the tying goal until the flag shot up from the linesman, declaring the play offside. The energy would be sucked from the building as Adelphi would control the ball for the remainder of the game and take home a 2-1 victory, good for their sixth in a row.
Peyton DeRouen would make two saves while Adelphi outshot AIC nine to three and held a three to one edge on corner kicks.
The 'Cats will return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Franklin Pierce at noon.
