Worcester, Mass. - After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Adelphi University field hockey team fell to No. 6 Assumption University in its game on Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 3-2.Â
It was the Greyhounds playing the aggressor in the early parts of this one, tallying seven shots by the end of the first set of 15. Freshman goalkeeper
Tayla Szmak would get her pads on three of them to establish the visiting defense.Â
With under two minutes to play in the opening frame, Lana Mignon de Wet teed up a feed from
Emiline Biggin off of
Ali Nagy's corner to put the Panthers out on top first.Â
Less than a minute after that there was even further drama on the other end of the field. After Assumption's Daisy Stone had a wide open net,
Kylie Peregoy hit the ball out of mid-air for her seventh defensive save of the season, putting her just one behind the all-time program record of 26 in her career. This kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the road team heading into the second quarter.
The frame saw a much different tune than the first, with both teams combining for just three total shots. Adelphi only needed one to score a goal however, as it was Biggin this time unassisted for her sixth on the season to double the Brown and Gold advantage. It wouldn't last for long unfortunately, as the home team's Julia Carbone finally broke the shutout streak to slash that deficit in half before the break.Â
Both defenses began to settle in as the second half got underway, with no shots being registered until over seven minutes in. Just like the 'Cats in the previous period, one was all the Greyhounds needed, as this time it was Callie Beauparlant who evened up the score at two-all. While the Panthers did their best to further some momentum with three shots towards the end of the quarter, the score remained deadlocked going into the final 15.Â
Szmak continued to hold strong in front of the driving Assumption offense, tallying nine saves by the end of the afternoon. The hosts' Stone was in the right place in the right time with eight minutes to play though, giving the Greyhounds their third goal and first lead on the day.Â
The Panthers weren't able to gather any offensive pressure after that point, running out of time to break their three-game winning streak.Â
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will return to Garden City on Tuesday, October 15 when they take on American International College. Game time from Motamed Field is set for 7 p.m.Â
