Garden City, N.Y. - It was a narrow defeat inside the Center for Recreation and Sports on Tuesday, when Adelphi women's basketball played host to Pace University, ultimately dropping a 59-52 decision.
In its tenth consecutive loss and sixth straight to the Setters (14-5, 8-5 NE10), the Panthers (4016, 2-12 NE10) shot just 31 percent from the field with a less than ideal 28.6 percent from three point range. Jordan was the leading scorer for the home team, posting a 10-for-19 clip from the field with 8-for-11 from the free throw line to finish with 28 - the only Cat in double-figures.
Another game started with Adelphi having to come from behind, as they found themselves down by eight after four minutes of action. Even after a burst of offense, the team still trailed by seven after the first quarter.
Carmen Kweti's layup at 6:29 in the second brought the hosts within one and
Lauren Beberman knocked down a three pointer inside a minute later to knot the game at 19-all. It was a Jordan hook shot from a Setter miscue that gave Adelphi its first lead of the contest, but they struggled to maintain it as Pace closed out the half with a 7-2 stretch to hold a five point edge at the break.
The Setters led by no more than nine throughout the third frame, as the Panthers scored the last five of the quarter to cut the visitor lead to three.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the final frame but it was
Kaitlyn O'Connell's back to back free throws that brought the game within one. Over the ensuing three minutes, Pace rattled off an 8-2 run but
Rolanda Robinson scored five straight to swing momentum back in favor of the hosts.
Carmen Kweti's first career triple brought the Panthers within two with under four minutes to play in regulation.
Down the stretch it was a matter of how could win at the free throw line, but Mackenzie Martin's three pointer at 35 seconds was the dagger that secured Pace its fourth victory of its last five games.
Kweti matched her points and blocks with five each, but it was Pace that won the game on the glass, holding a 49-35 advantage in rebounds.
Adelphi trips to Bentley University for its next game on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Falcons were ranked eighth in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association Poll and are one of two NE10 members schools in the top-25.
