Garden City, N.Y. - A four-year losing streak was snapped on Tuesday night as Adelphi men's hoops defeated Pace University by a narrow 66-63 decision inside the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Dating back to the 2019-20 season, the Panthers (14-6, 10-4 NE10) took down an undefeated Pace team in the Goldstein Fitness Center with a game-leading 22 points from Jared Rivers and 11 team three-pointers.
Tonight's victory saw three Adelphi players reach double-digit scoring, including 12 points off the bench courtesy of 4-of-7 shooting from
Seth Brown.
Adelphi only worked out to a 6-3 lead before neither team scored for nearly three minutes, but after trading a pair of baskets, the home team held onto its lead for the remainder of the first half. Brown came off the bench to score two threes on back-to-back possessions which put the Cats in the drivers' seat.
David Luberoff turned a blocked shot into a pair of points to give Adelphi its largest lead of eight with 8:01 to play. Down the stretch it was Kenyoue Ondaan's free throw that held a six point edge over Pace heading into the locker room.
Brown's nine points in the first half all came from beyond the arc and Adelphi outrebounded its opponent 22-15.
Pace never trailed by more than single digits in the second half, and after scoring eight unanswered, came within one of the home team at 7:08.
Elijah Lewis's turnover at 5:35 resulted in a lead change in the contest, but he made up for that miscue with a triple 25 seconds later when of
Dayshaun Walton unselfishly dished a pass his way.
The game remained a one possession contest for the rest of regulation, neither team leading by more than two and experiencing three ties under the five minute mark. At 1:46, Tray Alexander used an offensive board by Marc Dadika to score and lock the game at 63-63.
Mason Jackson got bumped under the basket and made one of two attempts at the free throw line with just 33 seconds to play but an unsuccessful layup on the other side made way for the Panthers to hold on for the win. Walton made both after drawing a foul at nine seconds and a three attempt from Alexander fell short, giving Adelphi the win.
Dave Duke's squad will trip to Bentley University this weekend to take on the Falcons in a 3:30 p.m. contest. Bentley is also coming off a narrow decision, but for them, a 65-62 loss to Saint Anselm. Earlier in the season, the Panthers took a 71-68 decision with the help of 17 points from
Matthew Price.
