Garden City, N.Y. - In a game that saw Adelphi women's basketball hold the lead for a better part of the contest, the Panthers ultimately fell 57-66 to Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday, extending its losing streak to eight.
The Panthers (4-14, 2-10 NE10) had the advantage in points from turnovers and second chances, but following a a four-point deficit in the third, the team could not outlast the Owls (10-8, 7-5 NE10).
For the first time since the home opener in November, Adelphi led after the first quarter of action, using a four-point edge to lead 17-13 over Southern Connecticut. Most notably,
Jenna Jordan pulled down three offensive boards which helped the home team earn nine second chance points in the opener.
The visitors used four unanswered points in the early going of the second to bring the game to an even 19-all, but a three-pointer courtesy of
Maura Carney put the hosts back in the lead with 2:30 left til halftime. Her trey sparked a 9-4 run in favor of Adelphi to head into the break with a three point advantage. Leading scorer Jordan managed to post a perfect frame at the charity stripe, ultimately concluding the contest with a 10-for-11 performance in free throws.
Coming out of the break, a tightly contest third frame saw neither side lead by more than three points, but the Owls used a scoring run of four unanswered in the early part to stake its claim. At the buzzer to signal the end of the third, Southern Connecticut used a Hope Fox jumper to take a 41-40 advantage, heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Rolanda Robinson capitalized on an Owl miscue at 8:12 to turn a driving layup into a four-point lead and Jordan kept it that margin with back-to-back makes nearly a minute later, however two consecutive threes for SCSU made it even at 51-all. Missed free throws and untimely turnovers saw the competitive game slip away as Southern stretched its lead to at-most nine, closing out the contest with a 66-57 victory.
Jordan led the Brown and Gold with 20 points and 10 boards while
Kaitlyn O'Connell was the other lone Panther in double-digit scoring with 12.
Isabella Asencio and Robinson both chipped in nine apiece.
