Second-Half Rally for Women's Basketball Falls Short at Saint Michael's, 62-59

Colchester, Vt. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team nearly overcame a 20-point first-half deficit, but fell short in a 62-59 loss to NE10 foe Saint Michael's College Saturday at the Ross Sports Center in Colchester.

A suffocating 42-point performance from Adelphi (4-13, 2-9 NE10) in the second half wasn't enough to snap what is now a seven-game skid for the 'Cats.

Just as the visitors trailed by double digits entering the third quarter, the Panthers cut the hosts' lead down to 41-33 with 10 minutes still left to play.

Freshman guard Isabella Asencio -- who scored a career-high 24 points in the loss -- accounted for half of Adelphi's 16 points in the quarter.

In a team-high 36 minutes on the floor, Asencio was 9-for-19 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line.

Asencio dropped another twelve points in the fourth quarter, before Rolanda Robinson's two buckets in the final minute closed the gap to 61-59.

As Saint Michael's followed with a 1-for-2 trip to the stripe, Adelphi had an opportunity to tie it at the buzzer.

Driving upcourt on the ensuing inbound and needing a three to tie, Asencio and Rolanda Robinson both hit back iron on their attempts before time expired.

Sophomore guard Christina Sanchez set a new career-high with 13 points in the effort. Fellow sophomore Carmen Kweti had another strong defensive game with six rebounds and four blocks.

Head Coach Sade Jackson and her Adelphi squad come home for their Morgan's Message game against Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday (Jan. 24) at 5:30 p.m.
