Garden City, N.Y. - Despite even playing in the second half, the Adelphi University women's basketball team suffered a 54-68 loss to Franklin Pierce on Wednesday, stretching their losing streak to four.
Another tough start saw the Panthers (4-10, 2-6 NE10) battling back early, facing a 12 point deficit after the first quarter. For the opening four minutes, Franklin Pierce ran up the score 16-2 while Adelphi went 1-for-7 from the field. In that stretch,
Jenna Jordan was the lone basket while the team only went 3-for-17 from the floor.
Plagued with turnovers to start the second, Franklin Pierce was the first to get points on the board, when Kenzie Sirowich knocked down back to back free throws nearly two minutes in.
Kaitlyn O'Connell drained a three pointer and
Isabella Asencio put in a floater to give the Cats a bit of steam heading into the halftime break. Both sides only made five baskets from the floor, making for a 20-19 finish in favor of the visitors.
Coming out of the break,
Lauren Beberman, who earned her first start for Adelphi, turned a Raven miscue into three points to get things started for Adelphi.
Maura Carney's three pointer at 4:17 in the third quarter caused the Ravens to call a timeout as her basket brought the hosts within 10. Carney's three sparked an 11-4 run in favor of Adelphi which featured back-to-back three pointers from
Rolanda Robinson to cut the Franklin Pierce lead to just four. Regrouping, the visitors used an 10-2 stretch over the remaining 2:31 to push back out to a 14-point advantage with one quarter remaining.
With 16 points from both sides, Franklin Pierce closed out a 68-54 victory with a 40-36 edge in rebounds and an 11-for-14 performance at the charity stripe. The home team faltered at the free throw line, only making five on 15 attempts.
