Garden City, N.Y. - Getting its feet wet again in Garden City, the Adelphi University volleyball team swept its opening match in three sets against Holy Family University at the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday.
Sophomore outside hitter
Macarty McQueen starred back at home, earning nine kills on 21 total attacks for a .381 attacking percentage, leading the Panthers to their first home victory. McQueen aligned with fellow outside hitters
Sofia Pinzon and
Samantha Meehan to hit at a percentage of .409.
The Brown and Gold played competitive sets the whole way with the Tigers, but the resilience of the home team won in the end each time. The visitors pushed back strong, getting as close as 22-19 in the first set and 23-17 in the next, it was the final frame that had the gym on the edge of their seats.
Needing a set win to extend the night, Holy Family's Shelby Kinser tallied her match-leading tenth kill to cut the lead to 22-21 for the Tigers. Adelphi took the next three points under the pressure, finishing the final set 25-21.
Kambel Fiser led the team in assists with 19, followed by
Brenna Valsted's 11.
Jamie Yonker contributed 16 digs in the effort.

Danielle MacKnight and the Panthers continue their homestand on Friday, when they square off with Bloomfield College at the Center for Recreation and Sport. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
