Garden City, N.Y. - Missed opportunities nearly doomed the Panthers, but the Adelphi University women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to outlast Holy Family University, 2-1, on Welcome Back Night at Motamed Field on Wednesday.
While both teams registered four shots on goal through ninety minutes, Adelphi (2-1) controlled the shot differential in the match at 20-9.
It was a giveaway in Adelphi's own half though that put the 'Cats in an early hole.
With Holy Family (1-2) pressing for much of the opening forty-five, Maura Kilkenny forced a
Dylann Trahey turnover in the 15th minute, leading to a 1-v-1 opportunity in which HFU's Alyssa Hooten slotted home the game's first goal.
Holy Family's lone shot of the half stood up until halftime, although Adelphi had its chances early on.
Reigning NE10 Player and Rookie of the Year
Madison Apicella took over offensively in the second half, accounting for the team's first five shots, and eight of Adelphi's 14 attempts in the period.
Apicella finally leveled the score with her 56th-minute equalizer. Already on a tear, Apicella made a long run off a
Jessica Schmitt through ball and fired a shot below the crossbar to even the game at 1-1.
Six minutes later, the Panthers would have the lead -- and for good. Senior defender
Kayla Mushorn made a brilliant challenge and netted the go-ahead goal from long distance, striking from about 25 yards out.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the 'Cats are back in action next Tuesday (Sept. 12) at 4 p.m. against East Region rival Mercy University at Motamed Field.
