Garden City, N.Y. - The difference was an 89th-minute penalty for the Adelphi University women's soccer team Tuesday in a 1-0 win over Mercy University at Motamed Field in Garden City.
In their first meeting since the Mavericks ousted the Panthers from the NCAA Tournament last November, Adelphi (3-1) snapped a four-game winless streak against Mercy.
With the final minutes ticking down toward a scoreless tie,
Kayleigh Goodrich tracked down a long ball from
Isabella Banellis into the near corner.
After thwarting the possibility of a Mercy goal kick, Goodrich played a perfect pass along the goal line to
Madison Apicella, who got taken down inside the eighteen for a penalty.
Brooke DeRosa then turned to one of her senior leaders in
Morgan Salmon, and the captain buried the attempt into the right side of the goal with 1:42 left.
While the possession battle was nearly even, Adelphi maintained a significant 15-4 edge in shots. The 'Cats also limited the Mavericks to just one shot on goal in the contest.
Five different players in the starting line-up collected multiple shots, with Apicella leading the way with four.
Krista Aliscio stopped the only shot she faced in the Adelphi net.
A five-game homestand to open the season concludes this Saturday (Sept. 16) with a 3 p.m. kickoff against Assumption University in Adelphi's 2023 NE10 opener.
