Garden City, N.Y. - Brimming with confidence off its fast start to the season, the newly-nationally-ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team settled for a 3-3 tie against NE10 foe Southern Connecticut State University Wednesday at Motamed Field.
The Panthers (6-1-1, 3-0-1 NE10)Â generated plenty of opportunities off Southern's high press -- outshooting their opposition 23-7 on the night -- and twice turned Owl mistakes into goals.
The first came only 2:03 into the game, when
Madison Apicella got in front of a back pass deep in Southern Connecticut's half and took it to goal for her team- and conference-leading sixth tally of 2023.
Another Southern giveaway -- this time, in the final minute of the first half --Â would send the 'Cats into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
As the Owls (3-2-3, 1-1-2 NE10) worked their way out of the back, Southern's Mackenzie McCormack turned the ball over in a short field, leading to an Adelphi counter that resulted in
Kayleigh Goodrich's go-ahead strike.
The Panthers continued to work Southern netminder Abby Aughe in the second half and added to their lead less than nine minutes in.
An Aughe goal kick fell to the feet of Goodrich, who played a ball into space for
Carly Issing. At the edge of the eighteen, Issing fired a shot below the crossbar, stretching the difference in the match to 3-1.
Now facing a two-goal deficit, Southern still fought back to level the score against a stalwart Adelphi defense that let up only four goals entering tonight's action.
The Owls made the most of their five shots on goal in the contest, placing three of those attempts in the back of the net.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers travel to Manchester, N.H. for a crucial NE10 showdown at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
