Manchester, N.H. - In the first of two meetings between the league's preseason favorites in 2023-24, the Adelphi University men's tennis team prevailed 5-2 over NE10 rival Southern New Hampshire University on Friday at the Mark A. Ouellette Stadium Tennis Courts.
When the preseason rankings were announced this summer, Adelphi (2-0, 2-0 NE10) and Southern New Hampshire (1-1, 1-1 NE10)Â tied atop the poll with 23Â points apiece.
With the remains of Hurricane Ophelia set to make landfall along the Northeast corridor this weekend, the two teams decided to play Saturday's scheduled contest a day sooner.
The match still hit a fever pitch from the onset, after
Thiago Negrao and
Thomas Horsley earned the crucial break at No. 2 doubles that won Adelphi the team doubles point in a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker.
That momentum would carry the 'Cats to victory. In singles,
Marko Jovanovic continued his stellar play against SNHU's Jonathan Berling with a 6-1, 6-4 result at the No. 1 flight.
Viktor Hockl lost his opening set at third singles, but still triumphed 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in resilient fashion.
Hugo Munoz Reinoso also played a third set and won his No. 4 singles match by a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 scoreline.
After his thrilling outcome in doubles,
Thomas Horsley capped off the lineup with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and the Panthers are back in action Tuesday (Sept. 26) with a 2 p.m. home match against Assumption University.
