Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's tennis team's perfect start to its fall slate continued Monday courtesy of a thrilling 4-3 win over Assumption University.
After the Adelphi (3-0, 3-0 NE10) men, like the women before them hours earlier, swept doubles to take an emphatic start against Assumption (3-2, 0-2 NE10). No. 1 and No. 2 doubles recorded identical 6-4 wins, and at No. 3, the pair of
Reece Farrow andÂ
Hugo Munoz Reinoso edged a 9-7 tiebreak to complete the set.
Junior
Thomas Horsley later provided the clincher for the Panthers with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, which gave the home team an unassailable 4-1 lead. But
Marko Jovanovic and
Viktor Hockl first put Adelphi on the precipice with a pair of dominant wins, losing a combined two games in four sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
Jovanovic's 6-0, 6-0 win against Yannick Heitzberg at the top spot was the reigning NE10 Player of the Year's second double bagel victory of his collegiate career. (Coincidentally, the first also came against Assumption at No. 1 singles two years ago.) So far in Adelphi's three wins, the Serb is 3-0 in singles, having lost just seven games in six sets played. Notably, he and
Casey Recci also recorded their first win of the season at the No. 1 doubles spot.Â
Adelphi is back in action on Saturday with a 9 a.m. tilt at Bentley University.
