Pleasantville, N.Y. - On the leg of
Francesca Manzella's rebound overtime winner, the Adelphi University field hockey team defeated No. 10 Pace in double overtime on Wednesday afternoon, by a final score of 4-3.
Both squads came out of the gate looking to make a statement with two early penalty corners. The Setters established themselves in the offensive zone first, once Krista Dietz capitalized to put the hosts on the board first.
With the Brown and Gold needing a response,
Ali Nagy took a stolen pass to midfield and handed it off to
Amanda Lee. Lee then guided her way down Pace territory and fired a ball just under the goalkeeper's left knee pad to knot the contest up at 1-apiece.
While each side was looking for something to connect, a combined seven shots on goal still wasn't enough to put another goal on the board. That was until the referees granted the Panthers a penalty corner with under a minute to play before the break. From Nagy's feed,
Elisabeth Seyfarth shot a ball from the top of the circle that Lee was able to deflect past the goalkeeper once more, giving the visitors the 2-1 lead at the half.
As Adelphi grabbed the lead, the start of the third quarter saw the defense begin to anchor down in the Setters' zone. Even though this had initial success, the home team was able to break through, netting two goals in just 1:06 to take the lead back at 3-2.
The final frame had the drama beginning to ensue. After Dietz had a solo breakaway that was eventually broken up by the Panther defense, the referee granted her a penalty stroke with just eight minutes to play. With both benches holding their breath, goalkeeper
Amanda Montiel saved the heater coming her way to keep the deficit at only one.
Following a shot from
Kelly Johnson, there was a large scrum at the net with the Pace goalkeeper looking to have it secured under her pads. That was until the ball popped out right in front of Seyfarth, who shot the deflection up and past the defense to equalize the game at 3-all with a little over five minutes in regulation.
Overtime #1 saw a lot of chances with a combined seven shots on goal. However, through 10 minutes of play, there was still no winner. Following back-to-back shots from the Setters' Anne Kopec with six minutes to go in the second overtime, the Brown and Gold were able to clear it out and get some offense going.
Lee was again able to weave her way through the defense, this time down three quarters of the field. Following her shot being blocked in the zone, it was a scramble of defenders and Panthers, until Manzella had the ball roll to her and shot it into the back of the cage to end the contest and send the visitors home with their first NE10 victory.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will continue their road trip on Saturday (Sept. 23), when they take on Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
