Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Takes First NE10 Road Loss at SNHU, 3-1

Manchester, N.H. - On the heels of a 1:24 first-quarter stretch that saw two opposing goals, the Adelphi University field hockey team fell in its road game at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 3-1.

The Penmen offensive came out ready to play, tallying five shots, two of them on goal, in the first seven minutes of play. Though starting goalkeeper Amanda Montiel was able to initially fend off the home attack, SNHU's Emma Thibodeau and Amelia Crocombe were able to find paths through the defense to give the hosts an early 2-0 lead.

Less than a minute following the second score, the referees granted the Brown and Gold their first penalty corner of the day. After Jillian Riche's through-the-legs pass to Emiline Biggin, the forward's shot from the top of the circle was deflected into the back of the cage by junior Amanda Lee for her sixth goal of the season. The tumultuous first quarter ended with Adelphi cutting its deficit to 2-1.

Shortly before the second frame began, Justina Cavallaro entered the contest as the new Panther goalie, saving two shots within her first few minutes of action. Once again however, Southern New Hampshire's forward play proved too much, as a shot from Minke van de Poll finally found its way home. Despite two more penalty corners and another quality look from Biggin, the 'Cats entered the break down 3-1.

The start of the second half saw Montiel make her way back into the net, watching four shots go by her way, saving three. Defense was the name of the game seeing four penalty corners and five combined saves but no shots hit paydirt, as the game stalled heading into the final 15 minutes.

Adelphi's offense came pushing in the last quarter, registering four shots in the first 8:30. Drama ensued however after another penalty corner from the Brown and Gold. Following another deflection from Lee hitting a Penmen defender in the upper body, a penalty stroke was granted to the 'Cats. It was Biggin who walked to the line, but her shot clanked off the post and kept the score where it was. The attack began to stall following, with the visitors only tacking on one more shot.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will return home next week, when they battle Mercy University on Tuesday (Sept. 26). Game time from Motamed Field is set for 4 p.m.
