West Haven, Conn. - Behind a first-half brace from
Madison Apicella, the Adelphi University women's soccer team made it three consecutive clean sheets with a 3-0 blanking of University of New Haven in NE10 action Tuesday at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
After today's game, the Panthers (5-1, 2-0 NE10) have not surrendered a goal in their last 345:83 -- the longest such streak for the program since 2021.
In a first half where Adelphi outshot New Haven 14-1, Apicella cashed in twice to stake the 'Cats to a 2-0 halftime advantage.
As the clock ticked under twenty minutes to go in the first half, the Panthers started a counter from the back, eventually resulting in a penalty after
Carly Issing was fouled inside the box.
Apicella got a running start before planting her penalty underneath the diving UNH goalkeeper for the game's opening goal.
The second-year striker -- who recorded a two-goal game as a freshman -- obtained her second career brace minutes later.
In the 38th minute, Apicella finished off a perfect
Kayleigh Goodrich through ball off a New Haven turnover deep in the hosts' own end.
While the shots were nearly even in the second half,
Gia Mandile found the back of the net in the 82nd minute to put the match away for good.
Head Coach
Brooke DeRosa and the Panthers are back in action this weekend, when they travel to Colchester, Vt. for a 1 p.m. showdown at Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Sept. 23).
