Garden City, N.Y. - Powered by two fourth-quarter goals from the visitors, the Adelphi University field hockey team fell in its opening game of conference play to No. 4 Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon, by a final score of 3-1.
A theme for the Panther defense as of late, the first quarter was defined by defense and looking for openings on both sides. Despite the hosts taking a penalty corner within the first couple minutes of the game, the shot from
Elisabeth Seyfarth was blocked before it could make its way through the defense.
The second frame saw each team push into the offensive zone with more urgency. Both squads combined for four penalty corners within the first six minutes of the quarter. Saint Anselm took the final one with a quick shot inside the circle, which
Kylie Peregoy recorded a defensive save on. However, the Hawks' Maddie Davis was there to follow with the rebound to give the Blue and White the first score of the game.
Just before half,
Amanda Lee was rewarded a penalty stroke following a shot inside the box. After the visitors swapped out their goalie, Lee squared up with the substitute and lasered one that Sidney Falterer was able to save and preserve the shutout headed to the break.
To start the final 30 minutes, Adelphi looked for a zone to put themselves on the board. Following a penalty corner from
Ali Nagy, a shot from Lee was blocked before
Emiline Biggin found a rebound of her own and fired it home to even the score up at 1-1. The Brown and Gold finished the offensive quarter with five shots on goal.
The fourth quarter began with both teams anchoring down on defense once again. After a relatively quiet start, the final three minutes saw all the drama. Proceeding a penalty corner, Millie Forster fired one through the legs of
Amanda Montiel to take the 2-1 lead with just 1:24 remaining. With the Panthers looking eagerly for a goal, the Hawks took advantage with a visitor steal paying off as Maggie Burchill tallied one more to cement the game at 3-1.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and Adelphi will hit the road again on Wednesday, when they travel to take on Pace. Game time from Pleasantville is set for 4 p.m.
