Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Upset Bid for Field Hockey Falls Short at #5 West Chester, 2-1

West Chester, Pa. - On Tuesday afternoon, the Adelphi University field hockey team fell in a hard-fought game at West Chester University on Tuesday afternoon, by a final score of 2-1.

Feeling each other out in the opening ten minutes, both teams went scoreless on the back of strong defense. The ice wasn't broken until Jasmine MIller's spin move in the circle gave the hosts the first score with just a couple minutes to spare in the frame.

Not to be outdone, the Panthers found themselves taking a penalty corner just over 45 seconds later. After Hailey Galison inbounded the corner, Elisabeth Seyfarth shot a ball from the top of the circle that Galison deflected in front of the net to put the visitors on the board and tie the game at 1 apiece.

The second quarter was also headlined by defense, seeing three penalty corners and eight shots saved. Drama ensued however with just under two minutes to play in the half. A West Chester shot on goal got by goalkeeper Amanda Montiel, but hit the head of defender Francesca Manzella just instantly before crossing the line.

After Manzella left the field on her own power, the Rams' Ella Shockley fired a penalty stroke, which was then dramatically saved by Montiel to preserve the tie at 1 going into the break.

To start the second half, it was more of the same with defense controlling the game. Adelphi defended three penalty corners and six shots of the home team's attack in order to keep the game knotted up.

Ready to get back on the board, the final frame was a slight change of pace. In the first minute, West Chester was given another penalty corner. After a couple passes around the circle, Shockley finally found some room this time to put the purple and yellow back on top, this time 2-1. Despite some offensive pushes towards the end, the Rams' keepaway tactics played favorably to them which ended the low-scoring game.

Head Coach Jess Mulhern and the Panthers return home for the first time in two weeks on Saturday, when they face off against No. 4 Saint Anselm at Motamed Field. Game time is set for 12 noon.
