Garden City, N.Y. - After a heavy offensive push from the visitors in the second half, the No. 8 Adelphi University field hockey team dropped its home opener to Newberry College at Motamed Field Friday night by a final score of 4-2.Â
The two teams spent the first quarter feeling each others' offenses out, with Newberry managing three shots on goal by period's end. It wasn't until 10 minutes in when Newberry's Tamsin Bangert scored her first of the year to put the Wolves on the board.Â
The Panthers struggled in the early parts of the game to find an offensive opportunity. In the final minute of the opening frame,Â
Jillian Riche guided a ball she took down the right side for a cross-field pass that found
Ali Nagy directly in front of the net for the game-tying goal.
It didn't take long in the second half for the Wolves to find their rhythm. Bangert found her second of the game off a feed from Stembile Chikoore to take an early 2-1 lead in the second half. While the third quarter gave Adelphi four penalty corners and four shots, they weren't able to capitalize on any of those opportunities.Â
Bangert continued her scoring clinic in the third frame, scoring her third and fourth of the game in a 10-minute stretch. The home team's six shots in the final 15 minutes only netted one score from
Amanda Lee with just over 12 minutes to play to end the game at 4-2.
Head Coach
Jess Mulhern and the Panthers will hit the road next week and first face No. 1 East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday (Sept. 5) at 4 p.m.
