Garden City, N.Y. - As the curtain came down on the 2023 season Thursday night, the Adelphi University women's soccer team found itself no on the short end of a 2-0 loss to Wilmington University at Motamed Field in Garden City.
The Panthers (0-1) got opportunities early, but failed to put one away.
In her first collegiate action,
Kayleigh Goodrich put a centering pass over the bar 2:43Â into the match and -- minutes later -- got stopped at the near post by Wilmington keeper Mio Nakajima.
While the 'Cats outshot the Wildcats 18-8 in the contest, Wilmington accounted for the only two shots that stood up on the scoreboard.
Seven minutes into the second half, Wilmington broke the scoreless tie, when Manuela Restrepo played a ball towards the far post that tucked underneath the upper-left 90.
As Adelphi now needed to claw back, the hole only grew deeper in the 69th minute, after Restrepo deposited a penalty into the lower-left netting.
Although the Panthers controlled play for much of the final twenty minutes, the two-goal difference proved too large to overcome.
