Garden City, N.Y. - After a come-from-behind walk-off base hit in Game 1 and a five-pitcher effort in Game 2, the Adelphi University baseball team completed its four-game series sweep over Southern Connecticut State University on Senior Day.
Game 1: Adelphi 2, Southern Connecticut State 1
Following the pre-game Senior Day festivities, it was the Owls who struck the board first. A double down the right-field line from Mike Ferrett gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Much of the later innings were defined by the Panthers' struggles to capitalize with runners in scoring position. After stranding three in the first two innings, the biggest heartbreaker came in the third frame after
Alec Maag doubled to right-center, only for
Anthony Cipri to be gunned down at home for the second out of the inning. After Maag himself advanced to third, the home team still couldn't bring anyone home, leaving them scoreless through three.
With one more stranded at third in the fourth inning, starting pitcher
Brendan Kenneally's efforts were beginning to feel fruitless. The freshman ended up going all seven innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while collecting seven strikeouts.
After only getting two hits from the fourth through the sixth, the hosts were heading into the bottom of the seventh, facing SCSU closer Matt Smith. After both
Albert Ramos and Anthony Rende got on base, Cipri's grounder up the middle brought Ramos home to tie the game at 1-all. Following Maag's intentional walk, it was
Michael Draskin's turn to come to the plate. The first baseman hit the first pitch he saw through the left side of the infield to bring home Rende and secure the 2-1 win for the 'Cats.
Game 2: Adelphi 4, Southern Connecticut State 1
In the nightcap, it was the Panthers who led first, following a sacrifice fly from
Jack Wishner that staked Adelphi to a 1-0 lead.
The hosts continued to build their lead in the fourth, when Draskin and Wishner knocked a pair of singles through the left side to bring home two more runs -- increasing the lead to 3-0.
The Owls finally got themselves on the scoreboard in the sixth on a Chad Fedeli fielder's choice. Starter Tommy Benincaso kept the 'Cats at bay during the visitors' comeback attempt, going 7.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, along with three strikeouts.
The hosts added some insurance in the eighth, after
Kyle Olson's groundout brought home
Tim Feliz to bump up the lead to 4-1.
Coleton Reitan came in for the ninth inning to close out the collective pitching effort. Reitan allowed two hits and collected two strikeouts for his fourth save of the season.
Jacob Pedersen gets credited with his second win on the year, following his 2.2 shutout innings of work, allowing two hits and garnering three strikeouts.
The Adelphi University baseball team now awaits its fate, with the NE10 Tournament draw set to be announced at the conclusion of the regular season on Sunday. An update will be posted as soon as its available on
