Softball Stings Yellow Jackets with Saturday Sweep; 7-2, 10-0

Garden City, N.Y. - With near double-digit scoring in each contest, the Adelphi University softball team capped the weekend with a clean sweep of American International College on Saturday, defeating the Yellow Jackets 7-2 and 10-0.

Game One:  Adelphi 7, AIC 2
The home team recorded two runs in each of the first two innings to start things off in the NE10 doubleheader, but not before American International cut into their deficit with a two-spot of their own in the top of the third.

Kendall Winn put up a two-run triple in the first and Amanda Owens plated Jaden Farhat in the ensuing frame. Brianna Fischer continued mashing at the plate after yesterday's walk-off home run, recording a triple in the third and eventually scored herself. The Panthers added one more insurance run in the fourth and kept the Yellow Jackets from even reaching the basepaths for the remainder of the game.

Lindsey Hibbs picked up with number 14 after striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs to her bill.

Game Two: Adelphi 10, AIC 0 (5 Innings)
Tierney Fitzgerald picked up her second win this season in the circle for Adelphi, throwing five complete innings with five strikeouts on the books as the offense held up their end of the bargain to end the game early.

The Panther bats got things going in the second inning when a two out-rally loaded the bases for Zee Zee Shreter, who drove in two runs after singling up the middle. A wild throw from the Yellow Jacket defense made way for Courtney Wengryn to reach safely and saw two more cross the plate to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.

American International threatened with two runners on in the following half inning, but key defensive plays from the Panther infield kept the visitors from touching home. The bottom half of the third is when the offense erupted for six runs on six hits to make it a 10-0 contest. Winn led off with a stand up double and was followed up with four more singles to keep momentum going. Wengryn cleared the bases with a triple that made it all the way to the right field corner, which basically sealed the deal in the second game of the afternoon to improve to 23-6 overall.

The Panthers remain on their home field for their next matchup on Tuesday, April 11 when they host the University of New Haven. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at Janet L. Ficke Field.
