Garden City, N.Y. - The now-No. 17 Adelphi University softball team took both games of a conference doubleheader on Tuesday from NE10 rival University of New Haven at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Adelphi now sits at 25-6 overall and 9-3 in NE10 play with the two victories -- setting up a Sunday showdown at Franklin Pierce as a potential battle for first place.
Game 1: #17 Adelphi 4, New Haven 0
The
Lindsey Hibbs show took over again in the opening contest. Entering the game with already three no-hitters under her belt in 2023, Hibbs posted her second perfect game of the season and fourth no-hitter.
Hibbs erased thirteen consecutive batters -- all via strikeout -- to start the game. Only two Chargers made it out of the batter's box against Hibbs, who retired 19 on the day via the K.
Hibbs' first perfecto came back on Feb. 22 at UNC Pembroke, where she set a career-high and nearly tied an NCAA Division II single-game record with 20 strikeouts.
Meanwhile,
Alexa Sacripante led off the home second with an opposite-field triple down the right-field line. Two batters later,
Brianna Fischer -- who came in batting a team-high .378 since Mar. 26 -- drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly.
Courtney Wengryn delivered a key two-RBI single with two runners in scoring position in the third, and
Angelina Kellogg picked up an RBI in the fourth on a fielder's choice that scored
Kendall Winn.
Game 2: #17 Adelphi 9, New Haven 2
In a game that plagued the Chargers by small ball, Adelphi overwhelmed the New Haven infield with four bunts in the second -- resulting in four errors and ultimately a five-run inning for the 'Cats.
Senior pitcher
Claire Fon faced only two over the minimum through four innings, but ran into some trouble in the fifth.
New Haven managed to cut the deficit to 5-2, until a four-run sixth by the Panthers shut the door on a comeback. As the hosts loaded the bases with no outs,
Zee Zee Shreter came through with the knockout blow -- a two-RBI single to center.
Fon went back to the circle for the seventh and locked down the complete game. She fanned the first two she faced and finished the afternoon with a season-high-tying nine strikeouts.
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and her Adelphi squad will play again tomorrow against College of Staten Island at Janet L. Ficke Field, in a rescheduled doubleheader from Mar. 14. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
