Garden City, N.Y. - It was a tale of two teams on Friday afternoon, as the no. 18 Adelphi University softball program split with Assumption University at Janet L. Ficke Field, 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.
Game One: Adelphi 2, Assumption 1 (8 innings)
It took an extra inning of play, but the Panthers walked off the game one victory, with the help of the long ball, courtesy of first year
Brianna Fischer in the bottom of the eighth.
The Panthers were leading after the bottom of the second inning when they pushed across a run courtesy of an
Angelina Kellogg single. That score held until the top of the fifth when Assumption tied it up with a one-out double that scored Corin Mahan.
By then, Adelphi had stranded seven runners on base and struggled to string anything together to plate any more runs. In the circle for the Greyhounds, Samantha Hardwick retired the Panther lineup in order in the bottom of the seventh, allowing her team another chance to steal the show. For the home team,
Lindsey Hibbs stayed locked in to retire the side in order, to put the fate of the game in the hands of the offense. Hibbs finished with another double-digit strikeout outing with 13 through eight complete innings of work.
After a line drive from
Jaden Farhat, Fischer stepped into the box to deliver some game one excitement and heroics, for her second home run of the season to give Adelphi the 2-1 win.
Game Two:
The Adelphi offense was not as lucky in the second game of the conference meeting, as they were held to just two hits and only left runners on base twice.
The Greyhounds managed to get their only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning as a based loaded bunt scored the first followed up with a groundout to the right side to make it 2-0.
Jordan Pasqerualli dazzled in the outfield, making a back-handed diving catch that saved a possible two runs as she doubled up the runner on first to make it two outs in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, the home team was retired in order, making great contact but hitting it directly to defenders who had to make plays.
The Panthers experience a quick turnaround and will host American International College in doubleheader action on Saturday, Apr. 8. First pitch is set for noon as the team also welcomes back its alum to Janet L. Ficke Field for the NE10 matchup.
