Garden City, N.Y. - Opening the day with a 3-0 victory, the bats came alive in game two as Adelphi softball closed out a 7-3 decision against Georgian Court on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
Game One: Adelphi 3, Georgian Court 0
It took nearly the entire contest before the Adelphi bats came to life in game one of the non-conference sdoubleheader on Sunday afternoon, as the home team did not push any runs across until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Brianna Fischer led off the inning with a huge double to dead centerfield, and was eventually brought around after a perfect bunt from
Angelina Kellogg produced a wild throw from the Lion defense. The Panthers stranded one on base after three consecutive ground outs, but held a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth.
Georgian Court left one on base, for their fourth in the contest in the top half of the sixth, but
Lindsey Hibbs bookended the lineup with a pair of swinging strikeouts.
Kendall Winn executed a sacrifice bunt to move
Courtney Wengryn and
Alexa Sacripante into scoring position, after drawing two back-to-back walks to start the sixth.
Jaden Farhat had the Lions' second baseman horizontal to stop the ball from leaving the infield, but both runners scored in due time to give the home team a 3-0 advantage with an inning to go.
The top half of the seventh was the third inning of the game that went down in order for GCU, after two flyouts and a strikeout looking.
In the circle, Hibbs picked up her 12th victory after pitching another shutout, fanning 10 batters in the process.
Game Two:
After the visitors plated one in the top of the first, the game was at a stalemate on offense for the next 2.5 innings. Adelphi had a chance to break open the scoring in the bottom of the second after loading the bases, but waited til the third to put up a three-spot and regain the lead.
The home team added another run in the next frame when
Zee Zee Shreter came around to score on a Wengryn single up the middle. Until then the GCU offense had remained quiet, but an extended fifth inning saw the visitors come within one after three hits and one error with two still left on base.
Unsatisfied with their one-run edge, Adelphi tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning courtesy of two hits and a pair of miscues from the Lions. The Panthers had a chance to add a few more to their run total, but a line drive from Kellogg concluded the inning with still two runners left on base.
Claire Fon earned the victory after coming to the mound in relief of
Tierney Fitzgerald who got the game two start. Hibbs returned for 2.1 innings to pick up her second save of the season.
