Garden City, N.Y. - In a tune-up ahead of the nearing NE10 Championship, the Adelphi University men's tennis team took down nearby neighbor Hofstra University by a 5-2 final on Thursday at the Adelphi Tennis Courts in Garden City.
The Panthers, who now stand at 11-6 and await their seeding in the NE10 Tournament, were resilient in singles competition against the Pride (6-10).
Despite losing all three doubles matches, the Brown and Gold turned it around swiftly and prevailed in five of the six singles contests.
Each of the first five went in Adelphi's favor, in fact. It began with
Gabriel Balestero and
Salomon Arce Lema, who both won in convincing fashion at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.
Arce Lema, along with
Valentin Le Goupil-Maier and
Henrique Souza, were honored pre-game for Senior Day.
A disheartening 6-7 (4-7) loss in a tiebreaker didn't deter
Marko Jovanovic from capturing the clinching point with a 6-0 decision in the third set at top singles.
In No. 2 singles,
Hugo Munoz Reinoso overcame a first-set loss in a thrilling 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Thiago Negrao came away with a 6-1, 6-1 result in sixth singles.
Head Coach
Rebecca Fakas and her Adelphi squad will play either Le Moyne College or Southern New Hampshire University in an NE10 Tournament semifinal next Thursday (Apr. 18). More information will be announced when the sites and start times become available.
