Garden City, N.Y. - Five innings of no-hit ball from
Claire Fon iced a sweep of the College of Staten Island by the No. 17 Adelphi University softball team on Wednesday afternoon at Janet L. Ficke Field.
Game 1: #17 Adelphi 3, Staten Island 2
By the second at-bat of the game, Adelphi's
Jordyn Pasqueralli was already on third, following a lead-off walk, stolen base and a subsequent wild pitch.
With two outs, CSI third baseman Elizabeth Moore threw away an inning-ending
Brianna Fischer groundout, leading to the opening run of the game.
Fischer, who is already on a tear of late, came up in the third and doubled to left field -- which scored
Zee Zee Shreter to double the 'Cats lead.
As
Courtney Wengryn moved to third on Fischer's double,
Alexa Sacripante's sacrifice fly drove in Wengryn, making it a 3-0 game.
Coming off her perfect-game effort 24 hours ago,
Lindsey Hibbs fanned sixteen Dolphins to improve to 16-3 on the season.
Game 2: #17 Adelphi 7, Staten Island 0
The Panthers wasted three hits in the first, but CSI starter Alexandra Frenza was unable to contain the 'Cats in the second.
A
Kendall Winn off-the-wall lead-off triple set the tone for a four-run inning. Both Frenza and CSI reliever Alexis Miramontes struggled with their command, with two of the four runs coming home on a walk and a hit by pitch.
Winn finished the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Wengryn matched her teammate's 3-for-4 line. Wengryn delivered an RBI double in the fifth and boosted her average back above .400 in the process.
The 'Cats also got contributions from the bottom of their line-up, where
Jaden Farhat went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and
Angela Lignelli added a 2-for-3 game with an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, Fon had her most masterful start of the season. The senior kept the Dolphins without a hit for five innings and tied her season-high again with nine strikeouts.
Head Coach
Carla Campagna and her Adelphi squad will now take to the road for the weekend, first matching up with Saint Michael's College on Saturday (Apr. 15) at 12 noon in Colchester, Vt.
