#17 Softball Wins Pair of One-Run Games at Saint Michael's

Colchester, Vt. - In the start of a six-game road trip, the No. 17 Adelphi University softball team earned a pair of 2-1 victories against Saint Michael's College at Doc Jacobs Field on Saturday.

Junior catcher Angela Lignelli, who came in with an RBI in each of her last three games, slugged the game-winning hit in the ninth inning of Game 1.

Game 1: #17 Adelphi 2, Saint Michael's 1
Both pitchers were very much in control, and kept their respective teams in it throughout the contest.

Before Lignelli's ninth-inning heroics, the only blemish on Jenna Devens' line for Saint Michael's was a first-inning RBI single allowed to Alexa Sacripante.

Devens faced only two over the minimum until extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Courtney Wengryn came through with a single to shallow left with a runner in scoring position, but pinch-runner Amanda Owens was gunned down at home on a perfect strike.

In Owens' turn in the line-up in the ninth, Carla Campagna sent Lignelli up in a pinch-hit spot, with the go-ahead run on second. With a full count on the junior, Lignelli found a hole in the left side of the infield that scored Sacripante -- who just got around the tag on the throw home.

Junior pitcher Lindsey Hibbs retired the side in order in the home ninth to secure the victory. Hibbs tacked on another 13 strikeouts to her season line, bringing it up to 249.

Game 2: #17 Adelphi 2, Saint Michael's 1
Midway through the second game, the Panthers were caught having to come from behind.

An infield single that glanced off Claire Fon's glove in the third inning staked Saint Michael's to the 1-0 advantage.

The next half inning, Adelphi responded. It was the hot bats of Wengryn and Brianna Fischer, who lined back-to-back one-out doubles into the gap for the tying and go-ahead hits.

Fon only let up a pair of singles the rest of the way, as the senior won her third-consecutive start this week. The victory put Fon in the double-digit win column for the second year in a row.

The Panthers play another key NE10 doubleheader tomorrow (Apr. 16) against Franklin Pierce University at 12 p.m. in Rindge, N.H.
