Garden City, N.Y. - On Sunday, the Adelphi University baseball team earned a series win over a nationally-ranked and familiar adversary, with a split of a doubleheader against No. 19 Molloy University at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field.
Game #1: Adelphi 5, Molloy 3
Both teams led by a run in the early going, but Adelphi and Molloy found themselves tied 2-2 through three innings of play.
After
Jordan Falco induced a key flyout to strand two runners in scoring position in the fourth, the Panthers capitalized on the momentum.
Sophomore shortstop
Jack Wishner, who led Adelphi with three RBI in the three-game series, lined an RBI double into left-center field to score
Alec Maag for the go-ahead run.
One inning later,
Michael Draskin found that same gap and plated
Johnny Catuosco from second with two outs. In total, Adelphi drove in nine of the team's 16 RBIs this weekend with two outs.
The bullpen was a strong point for the Brown and Gold once again.
Robert Affenita III threw 1.1 scoreless, and
Tommy O'Sullivan locked down the final 2.2 frames for his first career save.
Game #2: Adelphi 3, Molloy 7
Only twice this young season has Adelphi scored first. That trend continued in the seven-inning contest, when Molloy touched up
Brendan Kenneally for a pair of runs in third.
The Panthers were in come-from-behind mode, and answered immediately. Wishner first lined an RBI single into the opposite field to cut the deficit in half, before
Anthony Cipri drew out a long at-bat and lifted a game-tying sacrifice fly to center.
Kenneally made his first career start after earning the win against College of Staten Island last weekend, and struck out five in his first four innings of work.
It was in the fifth where it all unraveled. Kenneally got a groundout to start the frame, but a hit batsman and a walk ultimately set the stage for Jake McCarthy's game-breaking grand slam.
In their relief outings,
Nick Gavilla and
Gavin Graff each struck out a pair of Lions. Kenneally took the loss in the decision and dipped to 1-1 on the year.
Head Coach
Bill Ianniciello and the Panthers have one final tune-up before leaving for Florida. Adelphi will meet Felician University on Wednesday (Mar. 8) at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field at 3 p.m.
